This week, I took a stab at Jessica Begum's faux neon sign tutorial, How to Make Your Own Illuminated Sign. The word I chose was Buonanotte, the Italian phrase/word for Good Night or Good Evening. I've always loved the look of neon - I like things that are hot pink and that glow!
The instructions on Jessica's post were easy to follow, and surprisingly few supplies were needed. Using the EL wire to make the sign saved money and gave you a look very similar to neon tubing (though it is much thinner). The wire is flexible and can be twisted and bent into any shape your mind desires. It can be set to be solid light, a slow flash, or a quick flash - all of the lighting options look really cool! I bought my EL wire on Amazon - you can find the same wire at the link right here. I bought hot pink, but the wire also comes in yellow, green, blue, purple, red and white!
I bought the background board at Michael's for about $12. The double pointed tacks were tricky to find - they didn't sell them at Michael's, and Home Depot only had a double sided staple/tack option that was a bit too long. I used the Home Depot staples anyway, and, though there are a few points sticking through the back, overall I think the project was a big success.
I over-bought the wire, so am planning on surprising my sister with a custom sign too - I've got an interesting idea I think she, and you, will love! Stay tuned for photo updates.
What would your sign say?
Until next time,
Naomi
