Mini animals and mobiles are all the rage these days! Who doesn't love tiny woodland creatures, flying above your head? This week, I took to crafting and put together a marbled bear mobile for my aunt, Silvia, who is expecting in June!
I used Premo! Sculpey clay to craft the figurines. It was tough to work with - you really had to spend a bit of time softening the clay before you could begin to form your shapes - but the colors were vibrant, and I bought a sample pack of colors so that I had plenty of options to choose from.
For the marbling technique, I put a spin on the technique used for fondant described by Erin Gardner in her blog post, Roll, Twist, Bend, Squish: How to Marble Fondant with Ease. Everything was really easy to understand, and instead of using fondant, I applied her method to the clay.
After baking the clay to harden, following the directions on the Sculpey packaging, I painted my little bears (I know, guys, these are supposed to be bears) with complimenting colors and tiny details. I thought I'd add a touch of gold on the tails - another on-trend move that really went well with the wire I'd selected.
Twisting the wires into the correct shape wasn't easy. I mean, it twisted easily, but getting it to flow or hold shape was a challenge. Luckily, the mobile seems to balance well (though, I do wish I'd made more bears, instead of the seven colors of the rainbow). I'm sure I'll make another some day.
My mobile is unisex, great for a little boy or a little girl. I hope that you get some inspiration from the photos and tutorials! I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Silvia loves it! What animals would you choose for your mobile?
Until next time,
Naomi
