Ladies and gentlemen - my husband turned 30! Happy Birthday, Mario! Pleasing a picky eater is a tough job, but men young-and-old love Rice Krispies, so I thought that I'd try my hand at a Rice Krispies cake!
Rice Krispies are one of the easiest things to make. Three ingredients - butter, marshmallows, and cereal, make up this messy, gooey, delicious treat! But, as you likely know by now, I couldn't just stop with Rice Krispies. I had to buy four different cereals and give a grand, layered cereal cake a try.
Let me warn you all in advance - this cake takes a long time...if you're me, and you used only one pot for the entire process. There was so much washing, drying, and repeating for each of the layers that the process, while fun, was really, really time consuming (took two hours!)!
I started with a layer of Trix. Trix is not a cereal that I eat (way too much sugar), but I thought that the colors would be neat in "Rice Krispies" form. I also thought that Trix had green in it. Mario likes green. But...it doesn't. For those of you looking for green, Trix is not the cereal for you!
Between each layer I used a sheet of parchment paper. I placed the paper layer in the cake pans before filling with the cereal layer. This kept the treats from sticking to the bottom of the cake pan. You could accomplish something similar if you butter the pan, but I was avoiding adding more butter to a recipe that already had plenty of butter. Each layer came right out of the pans - and each batch fit perfectly into a 9-inch cake pan!
My favorite layer was the Lucky Charms layer. It was marshmallows on top of even more marshmallows (or whatever those little Lucky Charms shapes really are). I followed that layer with a layer of Cocoa Puffs, and then finished the cake off with a real Rice Krispies layer (that was Mario's favorite layer).
This cake was easy to make, but also really lighthearted and fun! I'll definitely make it again (I think the ladies at work will appreciate that)! Do you want to make your own Rice Krispies cake? Until next time,
Naomi
